Every year, the ATSSA Traffic Convention and Expo is a great opportunity to interface with our industry, meet new prospects, and engage with our existing customer base. But this year’s event in Phoenix, AZ was particularly special for Horizon Signal – we launched THREE new products, were honored with an Innovation Award, and had the opportunity to speak at multiple educational sessions. Let’s take a look at some of the highlights from ATSSA 2023!
ATSS Foundation
We kicked off our week with the annual ATSS Foundation events. Horizon Signal is a proud supporter of the Foundation, which works to support the children of workers whose lives were lost in work zone accidents. This year, we sponsored the annual Golf Classic Tournament and Sporting Clays Event, two of the Foundation’s biggest fundraisers of the year. A few Horizon shooters even took home some hardware and bragging rights! To learn more about the work of the Foundation, visit foundation.atssa.com.
New Products
ATSSA 2023 gave us a unique opportunity to introduce our customers to three brand-new products for the very first time. We launched our two new AFAD devices — the Trailer-Mounted AFAD, and the Cart-Mounted AFAD – which were designed with input from all segments of our industry. We were excited to hear all the positive feedback around these two new devices and can’t wait to get them out on the road!
We also formally introduced our new Portable HAWK System for the first time. This pedestrian safety system provides a quick, cost-effective solution for temporary midblock crossings in urban environments. It comes standard with a 100-MPH wind load and 25-year design life.
Innovation Award
We were thrilled when our Portable HAWK System was recognized with an Honorable Mention as part of ATSSA’s New Products Rollout. It is an honor to have been acknowledged alongside so many other innovative new road safety products. Special thanks to ATSSA’s Eric Perry for organizing this year’s NPRO event!

Educational Sessions
We always love to collaborate with our friends and this year we had two opportunities to give joint presentations. On Monday, Horizon’s Scott Heydt presented alongside Patrick Tremblay from Ver-Mac and Ginger Quinn of VDOT, for a session comparing Portable Traffic Signals and AFAD devices. Then on Tuesday, our head of R&D Art Simeone presented with Charlie Percival of John Thomas Inc in a session focusing on Urban PTS applications. Both sessions were well attended and generated great discussions.
Thanks to ATSSA for another great Expo! We’ll see everyone in San Diego in 2024!
